All regular employees who work a minimum of 30 hours per week are eligible to participate in SCM benefit plans. Eligible employees and dependents will be able to participate on the first of the month following 30 days of employment. You may enroll your eligible dependents in the benefit programs as well. Eligible dependents are defined as:
Should your employment with SCM end, your medical and dental coverage will continue until the last day of the month. This is also true if you continue to be employed by SCM, but no longer work the required number of hours to be benefits-eligible. At your cost, however, you may continue benefits for a limited period of time under your federal and state COBRA rights.
You have 31 days from the day you become eligible for the benefit plans to either elect or waive coverage. You will have an orientation meeting with Human Resources to review all of your benefit options.
Open Enrollment offers you the opportunity to make changes in your benefit elections. Open Enrollment typically occurs in November, and the benefits you choose will be in effect for the next plan year (January 1st—December 31st). Each year you will be notified of the Open Enrollment period and you will receive an overview of any significant changes that are being made to the benefit plans.
Other than the above situations, you cannot make enrollment changes during the plan year (January 1st—December 31st) unless you have an IRS-approved “change of family status”
